Content policy

Last updated October 1, 2026.

These are the rules for what can be posted and sold through Fanfares, and what can happen when something breaks them. They cover everything you publish here: titles, descriptions, preview images, tags, paid content, and links to content hosted elsewhere.

The rules

Sexual content and minors

  1. No adult content. Adult content is not allowed on Fanfares. That means pornography, sexual acts, and nudity or writing presented in a sexual way. The rule covers previews and paid content alike, and files hosted elsewhere that you link to from Fanfares.
  2. No sexual content involving anyone under 18. Do not post, sell, or link to anything that presents a person under 18 in a sexual way, whether or not it is explicit. This includes drawn, written, and AI-generated characters described or shown as under 18. Where content appears to show the sexual abuse of a child, United States law requires us to report it to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and to preserve a copy for investigators. You can report it to NCMEC yourself through the CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org.
  3. No selling sex, and no trafficking. Do not offer sex for money, or recruit people for forced labor or sex. Songs, stories, and reporting about sex work and trafficking are allowed.

Privacy and consent

  1. No intimate images shared without consent. Do not post intimate images or video of anyone who did not agree to it. If this has happened to you, or you are acting for the person shown, you can ask for removal at Remove intimate images posted without consent. You do not need an account. If your request is valid, the law requires us to remove the content from Fanfares within 48 hours of receiving it.
  2. No hidden recordings in private places. Do not post images, video, or audio of someone in a bathroom, bedroom, changing room, or similar private place that was recorded without their knowledge, whether or not they are undressed. Recordings made openly, or in public places, are outside this rule.
  3. No publishing other people's personal details. Do not publish another person's home address, phone number, personal email address, government ID number, financial account details, medical records, or real-time location without their consent. Business addresses, the office contact details of public officials, and details people have published about themselves are allowed.

Safety

  1. No threats of violence. Do not threaten to kill, injure, or assault an identifiable person, or an identifiable group of people such as the staff of a named business or the people at a named event. Violent lyrics and fiction that are not aimed at a real, identifiable person are allowed.
  2. No instructions for suicide or self-harm. Do not post instructions for methods of suicide or self-harm, and do not urge an identifiable person to harm themselves. Talking about mental health, recovery, and your own experience is allowed, including in songs, poems, and stories.
  3. No real graphic violence without context. Do not post real footage or images of a person being killed or seriously injured, or of mutilated bodies, without news, documentary, or educational context. Fiction, music videos, and artistic depictions are allowed.
  4. No terrorist content. Do not post content made by or for a group on the US government's list of designated foreign terrorist organizations, or content that recruits or raises money for one. Do not share footage of an attack filmed or published by the attacker without news or documentary context.
  5. No real animal cruelty. Do not post real footage or images of animals being deliberately tortured, or of staged animal fights. Hunting, fishing, farming, and veterinary content are allowed.
  6. No malware. Do not post files or links that install software built to damage a device, take it over, or steal from it. Writing about how malware works is allowed.

Scams, fraud, and illegal sales

  1. No posing as Fanfares, and no phishing. Do not pretend to be Fanfares or its staff. Do not ask anyone for passwords, nsec keys, seed phrases, or card details on a false pretext.
  2. No scams. Do not run “send sats and get more back” schemes, fake support accounts, or pump-and-dump schemes (hyping a coin or token so you can sell into the buying it creates), and do not sell content that does not exist. Honest opinions about bitcoin and investing are allowed.
  3. No illegal sales. Do not sell or supply illegal drugs, stolen data or card numbers, forged documents or counterfeit money, or hacking for hire. Songs, stories, and reporting about drugs and crime are allowed, because talking about something is not selling it.
  4. No paid raffles or gambling. Do not charge people for a chance to win a prize, such as a paid raffle, a lottery, a “zap to enter” giveaway, or a bet. Free giveaways and contests judged on skill are allowed.
  5. No platform manipulation. Do not post automatically in bulk, use fake accounts to inflate plays, zaps, or sales, or come back on a new account after an account restriction. Posting often about your own work from your own account is allowed.

Honesty and rights

  1. No selling or posting other people's work. Do not sell or post work that someone else owns without their permission. Disputes go through the notice and counter-notice process under US copyright law, not through Fanfares deciding who is right. US copyright law requires us to terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyright. How to send a copyright notice is under Reporting content, below.
  2. No misleading impersonation. Do not use a real person's or brand's name, image, or identity in a way that would lead a reasonable visitor to think an account or work is theirs when it is not. Clearly labeled parody, fan pages, and commentary are allowed.
  3. No deceptive deepfakes. Do not post realistic fake audio or video of a real person presented as genuine, including AI voice clones. Clearly labeled satire is allowed.

What you show and what you sell

  1. Public details suit a general audience. Titles, descriptions, preview images, and tags are visible to everyone, including people who did not choose to see them.
  2. Sell what you describe. Buyers pay before they can see what they bought. What they receive must match what you advertised.

When content breaks these rules

Content that breaks these rules may be removed from Fanfares. That can mean it is blurred, taken out of feeds and search, or no longer served from Fanfares. Accounts that break these rules may be restricted on Fanfares.

What Fanfares cannot reach

Fanfares is a client for nostr, an open network. Content is published to servers called relays that we do not own, and files can be copied to other hosts. We can remove content from Fanfares. We cannot remove it from servers that belong to other people, and other nostr apps can still show it.

Encrypted content

Some content on Fanfares is encrypted, such as paid content before it is bought. Fanfares holds the keys to that content, so Fanfares is able to decrypt it. When content is reported as illegal, we may decrypt that item to check the report.

Reporting content

You can report a post from its menu. Those reports are public nostr events: anyone can see that a report exists and which account filed it.

To ask for removal of intimate images of you, use the removal form instead. A removal request is not posted publicly.

If you cannot use the form, write to landfall_utopia854@simplelogin.com, which goes to Fanfares Safety.

To send a copyright notice, write to landfall_utopia854@simplelogin.com. Include the work, where it appears on Fanfares, your contact details, and a statement that you own the work or act for its owner.
